Is Veterans Day Market Holiday

The U.S. stock market, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, remains open for trading on Veterans Day. It is not considered an equity market holiday. However, the U.S. bond market is closed on this day.

This difference arises because the equity and bond markets follow separate holiday schedules. The stock exchanges set their own calendar and do not close for Veterans Day. The bond market, conversely, follows the holiday recommendations of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), which generally aligns with the federal holiday schedule. As Veterans Day is a federal holiday, banks are closed, leading to the closure of the fixed-income markets for trading and settlement.

Therefore, while investors can buy and sell stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on Veterans Day, they cannot trade bonds or other fixed-income instruments. This distinction is a key operational detail for traders and financial institutions, highlighting that a federal holiday does not automatically equate to a universal market holiday across all asset classes.
